What is a snuffle mat?
A snuffle mat is an interactive puzzle toy for dogs in which treats of various sizes can be hidden. Your dog tracks the food down using their sense of smell, which makes for a thoroughly exciting activity.
Sniffing develops and tires dogs both mentally and physically — so as well as being enjoyable, it's a genuinely useful game.

How to use it
Hide snacks, treats or dry food in the various sections of the mat while your dog watches. Once you give them the go-ahead, they'll set to work with real enthusiasm, using nose and paws to track down the food.

About sniffing
A dog's nose is their primary sense organ. They essentially perceive the world through smell — getting to know their surroundings, tracking down food, and navigating their social relationships. Being able to sniff is essential to a dog mentally and emotionally, and it helps preserve their physical health too.
Research shows that sniffing steadies the heart rate, reduces stress and helps keep dogs balanced. It's well worth devoting proper time and attention to letting your dog sniff: be patient on daily walks and wait while they work through a long investigation, and indoors, give them as many scent games and tasks as you can.

What to watch out for
Because treats go into the toy, the lingering smells may tempt your dog to try to pull it apart. We therefore recommend supervising play and taking the mat away afterwards.
With more enthusiastic dogs it's worth helping at first, so they learn how to get to the treat rather than trying to tear the mat up.
Although the fabric is hard-wearing and safe, the mat is not recommended for aggressive chewers.
